Layne T. Rushforth - Attorney and Firm Principal

  • Layne has practiced law for more than 40 years, having practiced law in Utah since 1978 and in Nevada since 1981.  In 2002, after having practiced with several firms, he opened his own law practice, and Rushforth Firm Ltd. started practicing law.  From June of 2017 until March of 2020, Rushforth Firm Ltd. was a partner in a limited-liability partnership; however, that partnership has ceased to practice law, and Layne is now the sole attorney of Rushforth Firm Ltd. and mostly retired.

  • Layne is recognized as a leading trust-and-estate attorney in Nevada by various groups.  He has had the AV/Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell since 1990, the same year in which he was accepted as a “Fellow” with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC).  He has been a member of the Legislative Committee for the Probate and Trust Section of the State Bar of Nevada for years, and, in that capacity has assisted in the drafting of some of Nevada’s laws pertaining to trusts and estates.

  • Throughout his career, Layne has established the Golden Rule as the “prime directive” of his practice. His goal is to treat all persons — including clients, trustees, beneficiaries, opposing parties, and opposing counsel — as he would want to be treated if we were in their situation, even if that is not reciprocated. As a corollary to that, Layne seeks to accomplish a client’s goals in the least costly manner. When appropriate, Layne encourages settlements, mediation, and other nonjudicial techniques to avoid costly litigation, even when he or his firm would make more money by litigating.

  • Layne has six children and 24 grandchildren. He and his wife of 47 years, Sharon, have been seen from time to time at Disneyland (including multiple visits each year) with and without grandchildren.  Layne’s non-work interests include serving on the Board of Trustees for the Nevada State University Foundation, tinkering with computers and other technology, doing family history research, and church service with his wife as Senior Missionary Coordinators for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
